Mahmoud Darwish
Mahmoud Darwish is considered one of our most significant contemporary Arab poets. His poetry is known throughout the Arab world and he has enjoyed international fame for many decades. He has published around 30 poetry and prose collections, which have been translated into 35 languages. He was the editor-in-chief and founder of the prestigious literary review Al Karmel and was the winner of the 2001 Lannan Prize for Cultural Freedom.
After Darwish’s death in August 2008 the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas declared three days of mourning to honour him and he was accorded the equivalent of a State funeral.
